Differences in photocatalytic degradations arising from oxidative cleavage of a peptide bond and a quaternary nitrogen moiety in a TiO 2 -illuminated suspension are described to elucidate the routes to mineralization of two amphoteric stufactants and one nonionic surfactant, namely, sodium N′-dodecylamidopropyl-N, N-dimethyl ammonium acetate (C 12 -amidobetaine), sodium N′-dodecyl-N, N-dimethyl ammonium acetate (C 12 -betaine) and dodecanoyl-(2-hydroxyethyl) amide (N-DHA). The resulting intermediates from the oxidative cleavage were identified by NMR and GC-MS analysis. The dependence of rates of formation of NH 4  +  and NO 3  - ions on the structure of surfactants was also investigated. The temporal mineralization yield was monitored by CO 2  evolution and by total organic carbon content (TOC) in the photodegraded solution. The peroxide value (POV) of the photo-oxidized intermediates was determined. A photomineralization mechanism implicating the peptide bond and die quaternary nitrogen moiety is proposed.
