The hydrolysis of the phosphotriester 2,4-dinitrophenyl diethyl phosphate to give diethyl phosphate is catalysed by the copper(II) complex [Cu(dpa)- (OH 2 ) 2 ] 2+  (dpa = 2,2'-dipyridylamine). The kinetics of the hydrolysis have been studied over the pH range 5.82-7.5 and the pH-rate profile indicates that the catalytically active species is the hydroxo-aqua complex [Cu(dpa)(OH)(OH 2 )] + . The reaction is catalytic and exhibits turnover. The hydrolysis of the triester can be interpreted in terms of the formation of a mixed ligand complex in which the phosphoryl oxygen displaces the labile water molecule on [Cu(dpa)(OH)(OH 2 )] +  and hydrolysis occurs by intramolecular attack of coordinated hydroxide on the bound ester. The copper(II) complex is also a remarkably effective catalyst for the hydrolysis of O-isopropyl methylfluorophosphonate (Sarin). At pH 7 and 25° C using a catalyst concentration of 5 x 10 -3  mol dm -3  and a Sarin concentration of 4 x 10 -2  mol dm -3  complete hydrolysis of the methylfluorophosphonate occurs in some 300 s. The protonation equilibria of 2,2 '-dipyridylamine and its interaction with copper(II) has been studied in detail by Potentiometrie methods at 25°C and I = 0.1 mol dm -3  (KN0 3 ).
