The purpose of this essay is to pose questions for practical theology concerning a liberative, community-based ecclesiology, and to pose questions for church leaders regarding the role of laity in shaping the future of the Roman Catholic Church. Identifying some critical issues before the church, the author proceeds to engage with liberative ecclesial visions, drawing particularly on the conceptual revisions advocated by Hermann Pottmeyer, the social and communitarian ecclesiologies of Latin American liberation theology (especially that of Leonardo Boff), and Paul Lakeland's work connecting liberation thinking with Euro-North American contexts. Mannion concludes with a vision for the future of the church, placed within a liberative ecclesiology and a vibrant lay ministry. He also suggests directions for practical theology. His intention throughout is to propose new wine (visions for the people of God) in new wineskins (ecclesial forms, policies, and structures) in which the new wine might mature.
