The conservation and technical analyses of the Tetnies sarcophagi currently is being performed at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. The two-year project, which is taking place in a gallery on-view to the public, involves surface cleaning, structural stabilization, identification of the stone substrates and characterization of original pigments. Disfiguring ingrained dirt is being reduced from the stone surfaces with aqueous, solvent-based and laser cleaning systems. Weaknesses in the stone are being strengthened through the combined use of acrylic adhesives and supportive steel mounts. The custom-fit mounts are also designed to facilitate safe handling and movement of the stone sarcophagi.
