This article argues that Brynjulf Jung Tjønn’s decision to use Bokmål in the novel  Kinamann , as opposed to in his other novels, which are all written in New Norwegian, was not motivated primarily by problems with a New Norwegian norm that is too broad, as he himself argued, or by career ambitions, as some critics claimed, but instead by the need to find a literary voice for the story he tells in  Kinamann . The use of Bokmål illustrates the problems that the narrator-protagonist Gjermund Brekke, an adopted South Korean boy, has in identifying with the Norwegian farmer ideal, and lends credibility to the twist with which, at the end of the novel, Gjermund is “reduced” to being a character in a novel entitled  Kinamann , written by his Korean brother. The article understands  Kinamann  as a work of migration literature that debates the importance of biology and culture for our identity.
