The marine tropical diatom Bellerochea yucatanensis v. Stosch grown as batch cultures at 22 °C ± 2 °C was exposed to UVand UV-B of different wavebands. The uptake rates of N-ammonium were affected by UV-B and enhanced by UVof longer wavebands. However, UVradiation with a small part of UV-B (WG 320) led to a slight reduction of the N-ammonium uptake. Uptake rates of N-ammonium are less affected by UVcompared to the reduction by UV-B and UVplus UV-B. Changes in the patterns of the pigments, N-labelled amino acids and the pool sizes were found after UV irradiance independent on the applied wavebands. Biosynthesis of all the tested pigments was reduced by UV. Exposure to UVplus UV-B resulted in an increase of the fucoxanthines, chlorophyll c and diatoxanthin whereas the other pigments were damaged. The N-labelling of free amino acids and the pool sizes were reduced after UV exposure. Marked damage occurred after UV-B radiation of short wavelengths. Changes in the patterns of N-labelled amino acids and the pool sizes after UV irradiance are discussed with reference to the effect on the key enzymes of the nitrogen and carbon metabolism.
