We report for the first time a range extension of  Mesophyllum engelhartii  to the eastern Pacific Ocean. We focus on the Gulf of California, where samples were collected in Punta Perico at a depth of 30 m. Tetrasporangial and gametangial materials were found. The material clearly had features of the genus: (1) internal construction monomerous; (2) haustoria absent; (3) outermost walls of terminal epithallial cells rounded or flattened but not flared; (4) vegetative initials usually as long as, or longer than, cells immediately subtending them; (5) spermatangial initials formed directly from meristematic cells; (6) spermatangial initials overlain by a layer of protective cells; (7) spermatangial conceptacle roofs formed centripetally from groups of peripheral filaments; and (8) spermatangial branches simple. This combination of characters was similar to those of other populations around the world and show that features that distinguish the species are sufficiently consistent to allow identification of plants anywhere.  Mesophyllum engelhartii  has not been previously reported in the northern Pacific. Importantly,  M. engelhartii  from the Gulf of California is a rhodolith-forming plant, which has never been reported in other populations in the Atlantic. The depth restriction suggests a thermal barrier for some seaweed species in the Gulf of California.
