The perception threshold for 50 Hz alternating voltage and current was investigated in male and female volunteers. The results demonstrate that the voltage thresholds for males and females are practically identical, while the current thresholds are significantly higher for males than for females. In the light of these results, the hypothesis that current is the only reliable parameter for describing electric hazards can no longer be sustained.
