Finding the location and morphology of subcortical structures in the human brain is of crucial importance for deep-brain-stimulation (DBS). DBS of the subthalamic nucleus (STN) is used as a treatment for Parkinson’s disease (PD) requiring accurate target positioning. However, segmenting the STN automatically is difficult because it is not clearly visible in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
