Medical technology and in particular automation has become a mayor driver in modern medicine. With the trend towards individualized and personalized treatments, the integration of information and communication technology (ICT) more and more grows into an essential ingredient in many medical devices. Model-based design has become the de facto standard for the design of complex systems across industries and it is thus not surprising, that in medical technology, model-based design is among the most prominent design paradigms. Combining modelling with data and novel information processing technologies allows for unprecedented and integrated medical devices not possible even a few years ago. The transition from a “one size fits all” paradigm to individualized therapies poses several challenges both in modelling as well as in application of model-based design methodologies. In this special issue, we present a variety of biomedical application areas.
