Abstract   The traditional Kancheepuram silk sari still maintains its appeal, and has a significant market share. Gold-coated silver thread (zari) is used in this sari. The quality, and hence the price of the sari, is dependent on the composition of the zari. Until now there has been no qualified method of assessing this. This paper presents an X-ray fluorescencebased method of assessing the zari.
