In April 1935, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) published a report on the case of Henry Shields, Arthur Ellington, and Ed Brown. One year earlier, the three African American farm workers had been convicted and sentenced to death by a Mississippi court for the murder of a white tenant farmer. The article, published in the NAACP magazine The Crisis, featured a photograph on the front page. It showed Shields, Ellington, and Brown sitting next to each other on a bench in front of a white wall wearing prison suits while they had their eyes and faces turned towards the camera. Arthur Ellington, in the middle, was held upright by his two fellow inmates (see figure 1)1. In the accompanying report the editors provided background information on the scene:
