Recently we published a study of Spanish ecotypes of Trifolium subterraneum L. (Angulo et al. 1975). That study has been the basis for the present one focused on the karyological analysis of some of the most representative specimens from Australian sources as compared to those of Spanish origin, already known, in order to determine the structural characteristics of their respective karyotypes and to verify whether they agree with the T. subterraneum L. subspeciation processes established by Katznelson and Morley (1965 a and b). These authors, basing themselves on the taxonomic study of Australian races and ecotypes from mediterranean sources, establish first of all a subdivision of T. subterraneum L. into three subspecies; ssp. subterraneum, ssp. yanninicum Katzn. et Morley and ssp. brachycalycinum Katzn. et Morley, considering all three groups as morphologically distinct and genetically isolated. In this study, we have followed these infraspecific categories in spite of the fact that Katznelson later (1974) upgraded them from the level of subspecies to that of species even though they are sym patric.
