A comparative study on the oxygen consumption of thyroid, adrenal cortex and medulla of pigs was made, in which slices and homogenates of these tissues and pyruvate and glutamate and some of the intermediates of the Krebs cycle were employed as substrates. The results are considerably different between slice and homogenate with addition or without addition of cytochrome c, DPN and ATP. The following characteristics in oxidative metabolism may be pointed out as principal results:1. In comparison to other two organ, thyroid is capable of oxidizing glutamate much more pronouncedly.2. Oxygen consumption in the cases of addition of fumarate and malate was much accelerated with adrenal cortex as compared with other two organs.3. With adrenal medulla, much accelerated oxygen consumption was the case only when cytochrome c is added to the homogenates. Such a fact may be due to the presence of adrenaline.The results were brought to consideration with reference to information avai lable at present, stress being laid on the observed divergence of metabolic features underlying oxidative processes in different endocrine organs.
