Mamoru NAGAMINE Third Department of Internal Medicine, Faculty of Medicine Kyushu University. (Director : Prof. T. SAWADA, Prof. T. MASUYA) To investigate the participiation of adrenal cortical hormone in the formation of serum proteins , the serum protein fractions in normal rats, in adrenal excised rats , in those given adrenal cortical hormone after their adrenals excised, were studied. The net production of albumin and r-globulin in the liver slices from normal rats, adrenal excised rats, and rats given Cortisone after excision of their adrenals , were also observed by means of quantitative precipitin reaction. Results 1) In spite of no appreciable change in amount of serum total protein between normal rats and adrenal excised one, albumin (%) decreased in the latter than in the former . In the rats given Cortisone or Predonisolone after excision of their adrenals, albumin was higher and r-globulin (%) was lower, as compared with the case in adrenal excised rats . In the rats given Predonisolone, the value of total protein was higher , while a-globulin decreased and [-globulin increased, as compared with the case in normal rats not given the hormone. 2) Amounts of albumin and r-globulin (average of 5 cases) produced in the liver slices from normal rats were 0.64 and 0.16 (mg./g. of liver/hour) respectively. In the case of the liver slices from adrenal excised rats, they were 0.32 and 0.25 (mg./g. of liver/hour), respectively, indicating lowered amount of albumin, as compared with the controls. In the case of the liver slices from the rats administered Cortisone after adrenal excision , they were 0.41 and 0.18 (mg./g. of liver/hour) respectively, showing nearly recovered value of albumin prodution . When Cortisone (10-6mol) was added in vitro to the liver slices from a normal rat, no remarkable changes of albumin and r-globulin production were detected ; in the liver from the adrenal excised rat , the production of albumin increased and that of r-globumin decreased.
