Concerning the splenomegaly in so-called Banti's syndrome, Banti has been previously pointed out that the injection of their splenic extracts caused to cytopenia in peripheral blood and maturation asynchronism of erythrocytic, leukocytic and megakaryocytic elements in the bone marrow. Thereafter, the histological studies have been made by many scientists, and their interesting results have been continually reported. Doan and Wright reported the decrease of peripheral blood elements followed by splenomegaly as "Primary Splenic Panhematopenia". And Dameshek, summarizing such diseases,. tried to put them into the unique conception as "Hypersplenism". In our country, "Splenic Anemia" has been reported by Tomoda, and Shimizu suggested that there was anemia promoting facter or substance in the serum of the patients suffering from Banti's syndrome. Thus, many investigations have been made on changes after enlargement of the spleen only, however, the causes of these syndromes have still remained unsolved. And then we recently assumed such syndromes as "Pituito-lienal Syndrome". Formerly, it has been cosidered that the splenomegaly itself caused to secondary anemia, because of the overwork of the physiological splenic functions, that is, the fact that erythrocytes, leucocytes and platelets are diminished, broken and absorbed.-andmaturation asynchronism of the bone marrow produced by hormonelike substance from the spleen. It has been considered that the hormone-like substance excreted from the spleen alone play an important role to such syndromes, but we may consider that such syndromes are due to not only pathologic changes in hemato poietic organs but also partial phenomenon that shows extensive central neurohumoral dysfunction or systemic allergic reaction including the disharmony of the mucous metabolism. Recently, allergic splenomegaly or splenomegaly induced by methyl cellulose were made experimentally, and then we reported that the splenomegaly thought to be due to the endocrine disharmony is induced experimentally by thymus feeding in adult rats. So we considered that the pathogenesis of the splenomegaly in Ban.ti's syndrome is seemed to be allergic reaction including infection or endocrine dysfunction, except "Congestive Splenomegaly" due to primary portal stenosis.
