An allegory connected to the exeges is biblical and attested by Prudentius, allows a political interpretation of the Carrand diptych. The consul by w h o m the diptych was ordered, appears on one side under Popilius's features, Princeps of Malta, that he sets up as model of Christian magistrate. Of the other one, wild animals symbol ize the sinners, the barbarians and the heathens. The representation of animals in the garden of Eden on one of the panels of the diptych could so represent the harmony within the Empire unified by the Christianity; more especially as Paul, the apostle of nations, appears on the other panel as founder of this unity and patron of the magistrate.
