This article explores the nature of monastic leadership and community, locating the origins of the revolt of the monks of Bobbio in the 620s in the succession of the uncharismatic Attala to the position of abbot on the death of the charismatic Columbanus. It probes the reasons behind Jonas of Bobbio’s failure to mention the introduction of the Benedictine Rule to Bobbio and its combination with Columbanian traditions in the Rule of the master, as well as his reticence about the development of sub-monasteries or cells partly as a result of the revolt. It also suggests a context for the Rule of Eugippius and two of the so-called Rules of the fathers, arguing that we can find their genesis in these events.
