The subject of our work was to investigate the expression of some glycoproteins and proteoglycans in cortical neural tissue of rats as a result of aging and caused degenerative changes. We used for our experiments rats aged five to seven months and rats over 24 months. Some of the animals at the age of five to seven months were injected in corpus geniculatum mediale with ibotenic acid with the help of a stereotaxic apparatus. The expression of chondroitin sulfate, N-CAM and GAP-43 in the first auditory area of the cortex in rats was established by immunohistochemical methods. Our results show a reduction of N-CAM and chondroitin sulfate and some increase in GAP-43 with aging. Changes in the auditory area of the cerebral cortex in animals with induced degeneration in corpus geniculatum mediale were similar to those in older animals. Our results suggest brain aging and degenerative changes in the nervous tissue caused by different mechanisms, often have similar manifestations.
