The category of ‘purity’ (cleanness, chastity) in the moral sense, and especially in the area of human sexuality, evokes ambivalent feelings today. On one hand, it still preserves its anthropological and ethical value, but on the other hand it is less and less understood, and even accused of being outdated and unscientific. This article is an attempt at demonstrating that what has been contained in the term ‘chastity’ (cleanness, purity) can, under certain conditions, be replaced by the category of ‘human ecology.’ The concept of ‘sexual integration’ may (this is what this analysis is trying to prove) create a bridge between ‘chastity’ and ‘human ecology.’ The reasoning presented in this article indicates the appropriateness of the term ‘human ecology’ in the area of ethical argumentation regarding human sexuality. However, this term will retain its depth (and will not be accused of superficiality) only if it contains a theological dimension, not only protological, but also Christological and eschatological.
