Aristotle begins the first book of his Physics with a chapter on method. In this chapter, Aristotle raises the question about the proper method of reaching the first principles of natural things. The proper method of reaching the first principles of natural things is evidently the proper method of natural science. In his commentary, on the first book of Aristotle’s Physics, Philoponus1 remarks that it is Aristotle’s custom to begin his works from certain common assumptions (ἀξιώματα).
