The reciprocal relation between historical, economical and social developments and urban space also exists between urban memory and urban space. Therefore, the analysis of the dialectic relation between urban memory and urban space and investigation of environmental perceptipon and their representation in the memory provides substantial potentials for understanding the abstract repercussions of memory on urban space beyond conceiving it only as a physical asset. There are many questions on evaluation of the environmental perception and analysis of the representations on memory; how is the knowledge on urban space represented through cognition, what are the processes of that, what are the personal restrictions to express the experiences and perceptions on urban space, what are the convenient methods and tools for evaluating all of them. These questions have been still argued. However, thinking on “how” the truth is formed, or “how it left its mark” or “how it reproduced the meaning”, rather than “What the truth is” will provide opportunities to reconstruct the historicity. Thus, in this study, the representations of the urban space on urban memory is examined through the case of Mersin by using the oral history method. The reciprocal relation between urban space and memory is scrutinized through oral history interviews with inhabitants of Mersin, and the improtance of aforementioned relation and the problems embedded on urban space in relation to memory is discussed. ÖZ Tarihi, ekonomik ve toplumsal gelişmeler ile mekan arasındaki karşılıklı olarak birbirini üreten ilişki, mekan ve bellek arasında da söz konusudur. Bu nedenle mekan ve bellek arasındaki bu diyalektik ilişkinin çözümlenmesi, fiziksel çevre algısı ve bellekteki temsillerinin araştırılması, tek bir mekansal öğe ya da bütün bir kentin görünen somut varlığının ötesinde, bunların bellekteki soyut karşılıklarını anlamak için önemli olanaklar sunmaktadır. Fiziksel çevre algısının ölçülmesi ve bellekteki temsillerinin araştırılmasında, mekana ilişkin bilginin bilişsel olarak nasıl temsil edildiği, söz konusu bilginin nasıl bir işlemden geçirildiği, ifade edilmesinde ne tür bireysel kısıtlar bulunduğu, bunların ölçümünde ve değerlendirilmesinde kullanılacak uygun araç ve yöntemin ne olduğu gibi çok sayıda sorun hala tartışılmaktadır. Ne var ki, tarihsel gerçekliğin yeniden inşasında, geçmişteki “doğru”nun ne olduğundan çok onun “nasıl” olduğu ya da “nasıl bir iz bıraktığı” ve “ne anlama geldiği” sorularının sunacağı olanaklar dikkate alındığında, söz konusu tartışmaların gölgesinden kurtulmuş çalışmalar yapılabilecektir. Buradan hareketle çalışmada, kentsel mekanın toplumsal bellekteki karşılıkları, aralarındaki etkileşimli ilişki çerçevesinde, Mersin örneği üzerinden sözlü tarih yönetimi kullanılarak araştırılmıştır. Mersin’in, Doğu Akdeniz’de önemli bir ticaret ve liman kenti kimliğiyle geliştiği on dokuzuncu yüzyıldan 1960’lı yıllara kadarki dönemde, kentsel mekan ve kent belleği arasındaki ilişki, bu döneme tanıklık etmiş Mersinliler ile yapılan sözlü tarih görüşmeleri ile ortaya konmaya çalışılmış, kentsel mekan ve kent belleği arasındaki ilişkinin neden önemli olduğu, günümüz Mersin’inde yaşanan kentsel mekan ve kent kimliği sorunları temelinde tartışılmıştır.
