Colloidal bismuth subcitrate is a compound that is widely used to treat gastritis and Helicobacter pylori infection. Gastrointestinal absorption is low, but when it is consumed in large dosages, side effects such as hepatic encephalopathy, or more rarely, nephropathy can occur. Early treatment modalities of hemodialysis or chelation therapy are important in acute nephrotoxicity caused by bismuth intoxication. This report is a description of the case of a patient who had acute renal failure after ingestion of a large dose of bismuth in a suicide attempt.
