The massive slide in educational achievement of the Czech pupils has turned attention to the state of educational leadership in the Czech schools. The terminology used to describe the school leadership roles in improving student learning in Czech and international literature is analysed and compared. The nuances of terminology may re!ect deeper di"erences in the understanding of the goals of school system and the tasks of the school leaders. It seems that both theory and praxis of school management in the Czech Republic pay only little attention to the instructional leadership. Klíčová slova: pedagogické vedení, řízení školy
