The purpose of this study is to understand the barriers to education from the perspectives of girls those who can not continue their secondary education. 26 girls who graduated from primary education in 2011-2012 academic year and did not enroll in secondary education in Mersin province participated in the research. In this study, interview method was used. The interview form used in data collection was developed by the researchers depending on the review the literature. The interview form includes 26 questions about family related barriers, school-based barriers, and socio-cultural barriers that are considered to represent the main dimensions of barriers in front of secondary school attendance of girls. The interview form was administered on a sample consisting of 26 girls who completed primary education but did not register to secondary education in Akdeniz (14 participants), in Toroslar (7 participants) and Yenisehir (5 participants) which are central districts of Mersin. The interviews have been tape recorded by getting the permission from the participants. The recorded interviews were content analyzed. According to the results of the analysis, the barriers preventing girls to continue their secondary education were determined as: “barriers based on family characteristics”, “barriers based on gender”, “barriers based on student characteristics”, “barriers based on school characteristics” and “barriers based on social environment”. Results of the research showed that social and economic incapabilities of families, the negative attitudes towards girls’ education, traditional gender streotypes, low academic achievement levels at primary education, negative relationship among the peers and teachers, secondary school attendance costs, negative attitudes of social environment against the girls’s education have effect on girls’ access to secondary education. Ozet Bu calismanin amaci ortaogretime devam edemeyen kiz ogrencilerin egitime devamlarinin onundeki engellerin anlasilmasidir. Arastirmaya 2011-2012 egitim ogretim yilinda Mersin ili merkez ilcelerinde ilkogretimden mezun olan ancak ortaogretime kayit yaptirmayan kiz ogrenciler katilmistir. Bu calismada gorusme yontemi kullanilmistir. Gorusme formu, kiz ogrencilerin ortaogretime devam etmelerinin onundeki engelleri temsil ettigi dusunulen aileye bagli engeller,  okula bagli engeller ve sosyo kulturel engeller basliklarinda 26 soruyu kapsamaktadir.Mersin ili merkez ilcelerinde ilkogretim okullarindan mezun olan ancak ortaogretime kayit yaptirmayan Akdeniz’de 14 katilimci, Toroslar’da 7 katilimci ve Yenisehir’de 5 katilimci olmak uzere toplamda 26 kiz ogrencinin olusturdugu bir orneklem grubu uzerinde uygulanmistir. Gorusmeler katilimcilarin izni alinarak ses kayit cihazina kaydedilmistir. Kaydedilen gorusmeler yazili hale getirilmis ve gorusme dokumleri uzerinde icerik analiz yapilmistir. Yapilan analizler sonucunda kiz ogrencilerin ortaogretime devam etmelerinin onundeki engeller “aile ozelliklerine bagli engeller”, “cinsiyet ozelliklerine bagli engeller”, “ogrenci ozelliklerine bagli engeller”, “okul ozelliklerine bagli engeller” ve “sosyal cevre ozelliklerine bagli engeller” olmak uzere bes tema altinda toplanmistir. Arastirma sonucunda ailelerin sosyal ve ekonomik kaynaklarinin kisitli olmasinin ve egitime bakis acilarinin olumsuz olmasinin, kiz cocuklarina iliskin geleneksel cinsiyet kalipyargilarin, ogrencilerin ilkogretim duzeyindeki akademik basarilarinin dusuk olmasinin, akranlarla ve ogretmenlerle kurulan olumsuz iliskilerin, ortaogretimin masrafli olmasinin ayrica sosyal cevrenin kiz cocuklarin egitimine iliskin olumsuz bakis acilarinin kiz ogrencilerin ortaogretime devam etmelerinin onunde engeller olusturdugu gozlenmistir.
