The R&D project PLANTSENS, funded by the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL) and managed by the Federal Office for Agriculture and Food (BLE), runs for three years (FKZ 2815701615) and it focuses primarily on automated crop irrigation in the open field and protected areas (e. g. glasshouses). Water is one of the essential resources for all plants and absorbs in the shortwave and middle infrared spectrum. It has a major impact on plant growth and prospective yield. Within the framework of this project, a prototype of a photogrammetric measuring system for automated determination of the crop water demand will be developed. The digital imagery recorded by the multispectral camera system is processed and analysed in real-time for an automated irrigation procedure for plants with respect to their sites of growth. This paper explains the functions and the technical structure of this monitoring system.
