GIS-based approaches for the optimal expansion of renewable energies are characterized by a strong dominance of engineering-oriented perspectives. It is acknowledged that it can be beneficial for the acceptance, to combine techno-economic site analysis with social perspectives. However, this only succeeds superficially, because essential theoretical perceptions from social and economic sciences are often neglected and the integration of social parameters is degraded to trivial attempts of approach. This fundamental criticism of a techno-economic oriented and target deterministic energy planning by GIS are carried out in the framework of the study. Build on this, more complex approaches for the integration of social perspectives in GIS-planning tools are exemplified.
