This work presents the result of a GIS-aided landscape and land use analyses of Schönbuch forest, south of Stuttgart, Baden-Wuerttemberg. As a base for an analysis of the land use changes one historical and one modern set of maps were georeferenced and classified. The historical maps are copies of the so called “Kieser maps” from the 17th century, which are unique due to their age and accuracy. Different landscape metrics were calculated from this data. With the aid of those, diversity and fragmentation of the landscape at the dates of the creation of both maps could be quantified and compared.
