This study presents the design of a serious game forimproving inferencing for foreign language students. The designof the game is grounded in research on reading theory, motivationand game design. The game contains trial-and-error activities inwhich students create conversations and then watch these conversationsplay out. Making mistakes results in students receivingfeedback and being requested to try again. An evaluation of thesystem was also conducted, in which participants used both simpletext and the game. Post-test scores for using the game were significantlyhigher than scores when reading the text. User receptionto the system was also positive. These results suggest that seriousgames can be effective for enhancing inferencing when foreignlanguage students face unknown words. Implications for readingcomprehension and for incidental vocabulary learning are alsodiscussed.
