In neighborhood-based texture synthesis, adjacentlocal regions need to satisfy color continuity constraints in orderto avoid visible seams. Such continuity constraints seriously restrictthe variability of synthesized textures, making it impossibleto generate new textures by mixing multiple input textures withvery different base colors. In this paper, we propose to relax suchrestrictions and decompose synthesis into two relatively disjointstages. In the first stage, an intermediate synthesized texture isgenerated by only considering the high frequency details duringregion search and matching. Such a scheme broadens the searchspace during texture synthesis, but may produce obvious seamsdue to large discontinuities in low frequency components. In thesecond stage, instead of performing local feathering along thesediscontinuities, we perform Laplacian texture reconstruction,which retains the high frequency details but computes newconsistent low frequency components to eliminate the seams.It does not only affect texels close to the discontinuities, butalso modifies the rest of the texels. Therefore, it can be viewedas a global feature-preserving smoothing step, and is moreeffective than local feathering. Experiments indicate that our twostagesynthesis can produce desirable results for regular texturesynthesis as well as texture mixing from multiple sources.
