It is being increasingly recognised that knowledge for addressing societal issues should be scrutinised by the relevant community. Experience from three projects, about sustainable planning with different scopes and scales, is discussed as to illustrate the argument: VISIONS, ULYSSES and GOUVERNe. The paper analyses the role of context, the setting of participatory processes and their dependency on targeted audiences, the communication and exchange of knowledge. It also comments on the outcomes of such participatory exercises.
