調査地は,本州では東京都調布市内の多摩川稲田堤付近の河川敷ヨシ原と愛知県刈谷市衣崎町の境 川河口付近の休耕田ヨシ原,九州では福岡県福岡市西区今津の休耕田ヨシ原と鹿児島県出水市古浜の 高尾野川付近の休耕田ヨシ原 (出水ステーション),そして南西諸島の沖縄県名護市我部祖河のサトウ キビ畑(沖縄ステーション)の 5 カ所である.それぞれの調査時期は東京では 8 月上旬,愛知と福岡 では 7 月中旬,鹿児島では 8 月下旬から 9 月上旬,沖縄では 9 月中旬から下旬であった (Table 1). ツバメは繁殖を終えると,昼間は水田や畑などの低空を飛翔して虫などを捕食しているが,夕方に なるとヨシ原などに集団塒を形成することが一般に良く知られている (高野 1982, 浜口ら 1985).標 識調査はその集団塒のそばにカスミ網を張り,塒入りに飛来したツバメを捕獲した.捕獲したツバメ には個体識別用の金属足環を付け,換羽の状態を記録してから放鳥した.ツバメの初列風切は 9 枚
