Cercospora beticola Sacc. is the cause of Cercospora leaf spot (CLS), is the most destructive pathogen of sugar beet (Beta vulgaris L.) worldwide. The fungus has been rapidly developing resistance to fungicides. Benzimidazole, one of the first systemic fungicides, were first used in Polish agriculture in the 1980s. The aim of the study was to analyze the occurrence of the E198A mutation among C. beticola isolates collected from Polish sugar beet plantations and to evaluate validity of using thiophanate-methyl in controlling the CLS. Benzimidazole-resistant strains dominate within C. beticola population occurring in Poland. The application of benzimidazole based fungicides to protect sugar beet crops against CLS should be excluded. Benzimidazole treatments create numerous issues as they are not efficient and do not control CLS and they affect environment conditions by generating chemical waste, and finally their applications increase production costs. The fungus’s resistance to benzimidazole has been persistent for many years and is based on genetic changes.
