Pepino mosaic virus (PepMV) has been a serious threat to greenhouse tomato production for many years. So far, five PepMV strains have been distinguished: European (EU), Peruvian (LP), southern Peruvian (PES), American 1 (US1) and Chilean 2 (CH2), the latter dominating in Europe. The occurrence of mixed infections with two different strains (combinations of EU and CH2) has also been observed. During 2016–2017, 71 tomato samples were analyzed for the presence of PepMV at the Plant Disease Clinic Institute of Plant Protection – National Research Institute. The conventional reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and quantitative RT-PCR (qRT-PCR) with TaqMan probe were used. The presence of PepMV was confirmed in 23 samples, however, the use of qRT-PCR allowed additional detection of a mixed infection of EU/CH2 strains in 3 samples. Thus, the qRT-PCR technique can be used to verify the presence of various PepMV strains in our country.
