The rapid increase of maize cultivation area, the use of inappropriate crop rotation and global warming climate have resulted in an increase of the incidence of diseases including ear rot fusariosis (Fusarium spp.) and common smut (Ustilago maydis). Using highly resistant hybrids is one of the most important methods of integrated plant protection. Therefore, the purpose of the current project was to characterize the broad genetic pool of elite inbred lines used in breeding programs. Forty-five inbreed lines were included in the study. Evaluation of resistance to ear rot was carried out on plants inoculated with spore suspension of Fusarium graminearum and with natural infection, while resistance to common smut was performed on plants only with occurrence of natural infection. Based on the obtained results it was possible to observe differences between lines and to select genotypes valuable for further breeding programs taking into account resistance to economically important diseases.
