Summary The effect on slugs of spinosad, grapefruit extract, copper hydroxide, and extracts of eight species of herbal plants was tested in laboratory conditions. Cabbage leaf circles and winter rape plants were treated with these substances at various concentrations and exposed to slug feeding. The influence of applied substances on the condition and vitality of the slugs and the quantity of plant damage caused by them were evaluated. A strong deterrent effect was found in the case of copper hydroxide and methiocarb, and a short-lasting deterrent effect in the case of grapefruit extract. Of the tested herbal plant extracts, Calendula officinalis extract was found to have a weak deterrent effect, while Polygonum hydropiper extract stimulated slug feeding and increased the amount of plant damage. The selected substances may be of potential use in protecting plants against slugs.
