Summary The paper presents results of the studies conducted over 2007–2010 to determine the effect of undersown catch crops on the weed burden and potato tuber yield. The following treatments were examined: control (without undersown catch crop), farmyard manure, white sweet clover, annual ryegrass, white sweet clover for mulch, annual ryegrass for mulch. Edible potato varieties were cultivated in the first year after cultivation of the undersown catch crops. The collected results demonstrated that cultivation of undersown catch crops and application of farmyard manure reduced the weed burden in potato compared with the control. The lowest weight and number of weeds were recorded in potato cultivated after white sweet clover plough-incorporated in the autumn. The highest potato tuber yield was obtained after mulching with white sweet clover.
