In Majorca, the periods of sede vacante often were turning in tense and complex moments. The absence of a bishop was opening a gap of power that was assumed by the general vicar vacant. Theoretically he was assuming the administration of the diocesan powers up to the arrival of the elect prelate. Nevertheless, during the XVIIIth century this figure suffered a vertiginous transformation. The social and religious conditions of Majorca did that the Cathedral Chapter was controlling the general vicar, using it to assume a major power, sometimes, at the cost of the authority of the bishops.
