In this article the historical novel El testamento de D. Juan I by Teresa Arroniz y Bosch (1827-1890) also known as Gabriel de los Arcos is analysed. The author passionately narrates a story of crossed political interests and doomed love. The historical events of the novel are not only a pretext for the story but rather they are further developed by the personal motivations of the characters. This has produced a splendid fusion of history and fiction.
