We analysed the three major forest fires that occurred in Chile in 2017. They were catastrophic events never before seen in this country, at least since southern Chile was colonized more than 150 years ago. After a brief description of the events and the cost of damage, we applied the concept of severity to the three events, and discuss some of the research needed to improve the current programmes protecting against wildfires in Chile.
