How cytoskeletal filaments collectively undergo growth and shrinkage is anintriguing question. Collective properties of multiple bio-filaments (actin ormicrotubules) undergoing hydrolysis, have not been studied extensively earlier,within simple theoretical frameworks. In this paper, we show that collectiveproperties of multiple filaments under force are very distinct from theproperties of a single filament under similar conditions -- these distinctionsmanifest as follows: (i) the collapse time during collective catastrophe for amultifilament system is much larger than that of a single filament with thesame average length, (ii) force-dependence of the cap-size distribution ofmultiple filaments are quantitatively different from that of single filament,(iii) the diffusion constant associated with the system length fluctuations isdistinct for multiple filaments, (iv) switching dynamics of multiple filamentsbetween capped and uncapped states and the fluctuations therein are alsodistinct. We build a unified picture by establishing interconnections among allthese collective phenomena. Additionally, we show that the collapse timesduring catastrophes can be sharp indicators of collective stall forcesexceeding the additive contributions of single filaments.
