Driven Kerr nonlinear optical resonators can sustain localized structuresknown as dissipative Kerr cavity solitons, which have recently attractedsignificant attention as the temporal counterparts of microresonator opticalfrequency combs. Whilst conventional wisdom asserts that bright cavity solitonscan only exist in the region of anomalous dispersion, recent theoreticalstudies have predicted that higher-order dispersion can fundamentally alter thesituation, enabling bright localized structures even under conditions of normaldispersion driving. Here we demonstrate a flexible optical fibre ring resonatorplatform that offers unprecedented control over dispersion conditions, and wereport on the first experimental observations of bright localized structuresthat are fundamentally enabled by higher-order dispersion. In broad agreementwith past theoretical predictions, we find that several distinct brightstructures can co-exist for the same parameters, and we observe experimentalevidence of their collapsed snaking bifurcation structure. In addition toenabling direct experimental verifications of a number of theoreticalpredictions, we show that the ability to judiciously control the dispersionconditions offers a novel route for ultrashort pulse generation: the brightstructures observed in our work correspond to pulses of light as short as220~fs -- the record for a passive all-fibre ring resonator. We envisage thatour work will stimulate further fundamental studies on the impact ofhigher-order dispersion on Kerr cavity dynamics, as well as guide thedevelopment of novel ultrashort pulse sources and dispersion-engineeredmicroresonator frequency combs.
