Polarization de-multiplexing and multiplexing by means of conical refractionis proposed to increase the channel capacity for free space opticalcommunication applications. The proposed technique is based on theforward-backward optical transform occurring when a light beam propagatesconsecutively along the optic axes of two identical biaxial crystals withopposite orientations of their conical refraction characteristic vectors. Wepresent experimental proof of usefulness of the conical refractionde-multiplexing and multiplexing technique by increasing in one order ofmagnitude the channel capacity at optical frequencies in a propagation distanceof 4m.
