A novel concept of self-phasematched optical frequency conversion indispersive dielectric microcavities is studied theoretically andexperimentally. We develop a time-dependent model, incorporating the dispersioninto the structure of the spatial cavity modes and translating thephasematching requirement into the optimization of a nonlinear cavity modeoverlap. We design and fabricate integrated double-resonance semiconductormicrocavities for self-phasematched second harmonic generation. The measuredefficiency exhibits a significant maximum near the cavity resonance due to theintra-cavity enhancement of the input power and the dispersion-inducedwavelength detuning effect on the mode overlap, in good agreement with ourtheoretical predictions.
