We experimentally investigate a strategy to discriminate between quaternaryphase-shift keyed coherent states based on single-shot measurements that iscompatible with high-bandwidth communications. We extend previous theoreticalwork in single-shot measurements to include critical experimental parametersaffecting the performance of practical implementations. Specifically, weinvestigate how the visibility of the optical displacement operations requiredin the strategy impacts the achievable discrimination error probability, andidentify the experimental requirements to outperform an ideal heterodynemeasurement. Our experimental implementation is optimized based on theexperimental parameters and allows for the investigation of realisticsingle-shot measurements for multistate discrimination.
