We report a theoretical study of clusters of evanescently-coupled 2Dwhispering-gallery (WG) mode optical micro-cavities (termed "photonicmolecules") as chemosensing and biosensing platforms. Photonic molecules (PMs)supporting modes with narrow linewidths, wide mode spacing, and greatlyenhanced sensitivity to the changes in the dielectric constant of theirenvironment and to the presence of individual sub-wavelength sizednanoparticles in the PM evanescent-field region are numerically designed. Thistype of optical biosensor can be fabricated in a variety of material platformsand integrated on a single chip that makes it a promising candidate for a smalland robust lab-on-a-chip device. Possible applications of the developedmethodology and the designed PM structures to the near-field microscopy, singlenano-emitter microcavity lasing, and cavity-controlled single-moleculefluorescence enhancement are also discussed.Comment: 14 pages with 9 figures (to appear in JOSA B 2006
