Experiments are reported on the combined application of product studies, matrix isolation and laser flash photolysis to organotransition metal complexes which act as C-H bond activators. Direct evidence for precoordination of arenes in the v2-mode is reported. Several complexes containing coordinated ethene were found to isomerise to metal(viny1)hydride complexes.
