A new group of macrocycles has been prepared by the combination of functionalized diphosphines such as bis(diphenylphosphinomethy1)phenylarsine with ds and d" metal complexes to give cyclic molecules with two metal ions and two Lewis bases (nitrogen or arsenic) surrounding a central void. Examples of the binding of cations, neutral molecules, and anions to these metallomacrocycles are described.
