Socialisation in a single-parent family has been associatedwith negative consequences both in previous research andpopular discourse. This article investigates whether thisassociation may be different in a society with a high rate ofdivorce and extramarital fertility. Using data from the Czechcontribution to the EU-SILC survey, it tests hypothesesconcerning the difference between the current situation ofadults who grew up in single-parent families and those who wereraised in intact families. We look for the infl uence ofsocialisation on single-parent families in threeareas—educational attainment, current partnership situation,and current family income. The results of regression analysesshow that the differences between children from single-parentfamilies and those from intact ones are very small in the areaof education (the infl uence is apparent only at the secondaryschool graduation level, no difference is present at thetertiary education level), relatively weak in the area ofpartnership situation, and imperceptible from the viewpoint offamily income. These results exclude a causal explanation forthe infl uence of single-parent families on outcomes, castdoubt on selective principles, and open space forinterpretation in terms of mechanisms of familyde-institutionalisation
