Economic and social changes since the year 1990 in the CzechRepublic have been reflected in the shopping habits of thepopulation. Not only is the 'standard' form of everydayshopping for basic provisions at corner shops now typical, butso is daily visits to specialised retail chain stores orshopping centres. Such daily shopping trips are often combinedwith commuting to work and school or travelling for otherservices and have become an important factor in the daily livesof residents. This phenomenon has led to the formation ofstronger links between inhabitants within a daily urban system.The primary intensity is observed not in the core peripherylink but rather between the periphery of the agglomeration andsuburban zones where most of the big shopping malls andhypermarkets are located. Frequently this is not a daily butrather an irregular or weekend activity. These places are thusbecoming special centres (secondary cores) of retail business,services, and leisure time activities competing with the citycentre itself. This article presents an analysis of theinfluence of spatial, socio-demographic and psychographicfactors on the intensity and variability of the commute forfoodstuffs and other shopping in shopping centres. The retailgravity model, shopping habits and shopping behaviour areanalysed on the basis of field surveys of the inhabitants fromcommunities located in the hinterlands of Brno.
